Land Rover first arrived on the scene in 1948, soon after World War II when two brothers, Spencer and Maurice Wilks, set out to make a rugged copycat of the US Army Jeep. They succeeded, creating a powerful and versatile vehicle that was purchased by a lot of people. The first models were very basic, though. You wouldn't have seen one driving around Chicago at this point and time. It wasn't until after several ownership changes in the 70s and 80s that the Range Rover emerged. It was this SUV that was targeted toward urban consumers more than those who wanted something tough and dependable.
In 1987, the Range Rover hit the United States and was a quick hit with rich, urbanites who wanted something that gave them a somewhat tough look when they drove. The Range Rover would become marketed as a luxury SUV to a small but very wealthy subset of American culture. The Range Rover was a big hit, though, and quickly became a status symbol in Chicago and in other cities around the country. Even today, the Range Rover is a sign that you have money to spare and you've made it.
The company did have a little problem with reliability of some of their vehicles, but the problems were taken care of in an efficient way and Land Rover has become a really solid product over the years. Even if you're only trying to get around on the somewhat decent streets of Chicago, having a Land Rover will make the trip a little easier and pleasant.
